Monemvasia, Peloponnese, Greece

Monemvasia in the Peloponnese is a small fortified Byzantine town located on a cliff in the sea, 400 meters from land. The peninsula is connected to the mainland by a 200-metre headland, and here you can hike, eat and sleep. This medieval settlement is full of cozy alleys, cafes and small hotels.

The city's name comes from two Greek words: "mone (mono)" and "emvasia (envasi)", meaning "only one entrance". The city was founded in the 500th century and became a very important port for the Mistras, among others, and remained under Byzantine rule for almost 700 years. The rock is one of Greece's most impressive and famous landmarks. Feel free to visit Event page in Monemvasia.

From 1971, a bridge was built from the mainland and that was the beginning of the city's "resurrection". The Greek Ministry of Culture recently announced (2023) plans to accelerate three major cultural development projects in the city of Monemvasia in the Peloponnese, read more here.
