Koroni, Messinia County, Peloponnese, Greece
Messinia County consists of several different municipalities with small genuine Greek communities, all west of Kalamata. The area is circumscribed in the Iliad and some of the places are still inhabited today, such as Pylos. The popular resorts of Koroni, Methoni and Pylos are close by and despite the winding roads it doesn't take very long to get around that part of Messinia. Koroni is located far down on the western side of the Peloponnese along the sea. Here there are cozy taverns, cafes, Sunday markets with local fruits and vegetables and the well-visited beautiful sandy beach Zaga beach where, miraculously enough, sea turtles still lay their eggs. The beach in Koroni is about 3 km long. Don't miss planning a visit to a medieval Venetian castle located above the beach. A favorite village for many Europeans.
