Kastania, Messinia Mani, Peloponnese, Greece

Kastania or Kastanea is one of the oldest and most picturesque mountain villages in Mani and has many historic buildings and churches. The village is located about 550 meters above sea level, 50 km southeast of Kalamata and 15 km from Kardamyli. Kastania has about 100 inhabitants, but in recent years more and more tourists have found their way to the hidden village. Especially during the hot summer: here the temperature is much more pleasant and the two local tavernas serve real genuine Greek food in the shade of an old walnut tree.

No supermarket but excellent service from local growers and sellers: fruit trucks, bread trucks, pasta trucks, fish and meat trucks come here about 2 times a week. Kastania is famous not only for its Byzantine churches with well-preserved wall paintings but also from the annual Kastania Chestnut Festival in October. Then dance here, toast with ouzo and roast chestnuts all night long!

About 8 km from Kastania is the popular village of Stoupa with two lovely sandy golden beaches (as well as several smaller beaches) has become more and more popular as a tourist destination for families with small children. The beaches are right on the main street and are legendary for anyone who likes sunsets! Easily accessible restaurants and cafes. A meeting place for locals and tourists both in winter and summer. During the high season, you can rent motor and paddle boats or learn to dive.

Kastania and Stoupa are located in a fascinating area called Mani. This is also the only part of Greece that was never really conquered by invaders. The population, the Maniots, built tower houses (so-called Mani towers) where they took shelter during the countless local feuds that were fought here. Some of these Mani towers have been restored and can still be seen in the area.
